Semaglutide
& Tirzepatide

What medications are used?

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are injectable prescription medications used for weight loss. Semaglutide is in a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists which include Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy. Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist known also by the brand name Mounjaro. These medications have been shown in studies to reduce body weight by up to 15-21%, which is similar results to bariatric surgery.

Are weight loss injections right for me?

Patients must have a BMI of 27 or higher in order to receive prescription weight loss medications. Patients must need to lose at least 15-20 pounds as these medications are strong and effective. We cannot prescribe to people who already have a diagnosis of diabetes, history of low blood sugars, or who are taking medications used for insulin resistance. We can not prescribe to patients with personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, endocrine neoplasia type 2, pancreatitis, kidney disease, suicidal thoughts, eating disorder, or alcohol abuse.

How do these medications work?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which means it works by mimicking the effects of a hormone called GLP-1 that is naturally produced in the body. Tirezepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist with similar effects. Both help regulate blood sugar levels, facilitates the body's ability to burn glucose instead of fat, reduces appetite and sugar cravings, and prolongs the feeling of fullness.

Common side effects of semaglutide

The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, heart burn, burping, and constipation.

We would recommend over the counter therapies such as ginger, stool softners, antacids, and probiotics for side effects.

More serious side effects are rare but can also occur.
